Banish the bagel and end
breakouts: Cutting high-glycemic-index carbs-such as pasta and baked goods-can
reduce acne, reports a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Researchers found that men following a low-GI diet-eating complex carbs like
whole wheat bread and fruit had 20 percent fewer acne lesions after 12 weeks
than those eating a diet rich in high-GI carbs. Because they're digested
quickly, high-GI carbs cause blood-sugar spikes that produce insulin. Excess
insulin thickens hair follicles, which traps oil and cause acne. Women may
experience the same effect, so stick to acne-fighting whole grains, beans, and
soy nuts.
